The Philadelphia Soul signed quarterback Mitch Tanney on Wednesday.
Tanney is expected to serve as the backup to Matt D’Orazio when the Soul take on the Los Angeles Avengers on Thursday at the Staples Center.
Tanney attended Division-III Monmouth College, where he was named Midwest Conference Player of the Year his senior season in 2006. He finished second in the nation in pass efficiency, completing 74.4 percent of his passes for 2,469 yards and 33 touchdowns.
He spent 2007 with the Alabama Steeldogs in af2 and was named the starter just four games into the season, finishing the year passing for 3,404 yards and 67 TDs.
The 24-year-old went to training camp this season with the Tampa Bay Storm, earning a spot on the club’s practice squad before being signed by the Soul. Tanney also spent a brief time with the Philadelphia Eagles during offseason training.
D’Orazio is expected to start in place of the injured Tony Graziani, who suffered a sprained MCL in his left knee in Sunday’s 63-42 win over New York.
Graziani is expected to miss the next three to four weeks.
In other roster moves, the Soul released offensive lineman Van Nelson and defensive back Rob Keefe from the practice squad
