Union stadium taking shape

CHESTER, Pa. (August 12, 2009)—Activity on the Chester waterfront is kicking into high gear as the home of Philadelphia Union grows ever higher each day. Bricks, stone and now steel are all creating a solid foundation for the future home of the Major League Soccer expansion team, looking forward to ‘First Kick’ next spring.

“Years of hard work from many people have gone into making this stadium project a reality and it’s a spectacular sight to see the building rapidly taking shape, “ said Philadelphia Union CEO and Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz. “Our construction partners are working relentlessly, with about 150 workers on the site every day. We are extremely appreciative of their commitment and very proud to be revitalizing the Chester waterfront into a special place where people can come to work, live and play.”

The first delivery of steel arrived this week, along with a 150 ton truck crane that will be the primary piece of equipment utilized in erecting the superstructure of the stadium. All in all, the stadium will take over 700 tons of steel, or 1.4 million pounds.

The process will initially begin in the north end of the stadium and will then make its way towards the Delaware River. Midway through steel erection, the 150 ton truck crane will be supplemented by an additional 90 ton truck crane to fill in specific areas of columns and beams.

A webcam of stadium construction operations will be coming online soon at www.philadelphiaunion.com, enabling fans to catch a glimpse of progress in real time, any time.

The state-of-the-art soccer and entertainment venue will soon be home to Philadelphia Union and its loyal supporters. Additionally, the stadium will feature a host of concerts, other sporting events and community activities.

“Watching the continued growth of the project makes us even hungrier for opening day,” said Philadelphia Union President Tom Veit.
