Oct. 20, 2001: 2006 NFF co-Gold Medal recipient and 2007 College Hall of Fame inductee head coach Joe Paterno ties Hall of Fame Paul "Bear" Bryant's then-FBS career wins' record of 323 as the Nittany Lions edge No. 20 Northwestern 38-35 in Evanston, Ill. QB Zach Mills hits Eric McCoo with a four- yard TD pass with 22 second remaining in the fourth quarter to gain the triumph.
OTHER NOTABLE DATES:
Oct. 16, 1993: Tennessee breaks Alabama's 28-game winning streak with a 17-17 tie in Tuscaloosa. 'Bama QB Jay Barker then sneaks in from the one with 21 seconds remaining, and the PAT kick completes the deadlock of the SEC powers. Tide's unbeaten streak is snapped at 31 games three weeks later versus LSU.
Oct. 17, 1964: Arkansas takes a big step toward its national championship by ending Texas' 15- contest winning skein with a 14-13 triumph in Austin, Texas. QB Fred Marshall connects with end Bobby Crockett for a 34-yard touchdown pass and the go- ahead score before Texas cuts the lead to 14-13 with 1:27 left to play. The Longhorns misfire on a two-point pass conversion try, and UA holds on for the triumph.
Oct. 18, 1986: Ohio State freshman safety David Brown establishes a Big Ten Conference record with a 100-yard pass interception return to spark the Buckeyes to a 39-11 victory over Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind.
Oct. 19, 1957: Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain takes in her first game of American football in person as Maryland upends North Carolina and former Terps' head coach Jim Tatum in College Park. At game's end, enthused Terps' players carry head coach Tommy Mont to present him to Queen Elizabeth for congratulations.
Oct. 21, 2000: Indiana QB Antwan Randle El becomes just the fifth player in major college history to rush and pass for 200 yards in a game as the Hoosiers down Minnesota 51-43. He accounts for 473 of IU's 611 total offense yards with 210 rushing and 273 via the airways.
Oct. 22, 2005: Central Washington sets a NCAA record by scoring 27 points in 79 seconds during a 61-33 win over Western Oregon. CWU scores on a touchdown pass, an interception return for a TD, a fumble recovery for another score, and a second interception return for a TD - all in the fourth quarter - to pull out the high-scoring triumph.
