School’s out, the grades are in

By Jeff Glauser

The school year is now out and the summer – come Thursday – will officially begin. For a Philly sports fan, this means the commencement of the annual tradition of the Phillies reeling us in with false hope.

Or perhaps the more sincere hope of three Sixers first round picks in one of the deepest drafts in history (then again, Billy King’s still in charge, right? Maybe we should scratch that one.)

Or maybe an anticipated free agent shopping spree by the Flyers, an offseason which needs much help but has already provided a strong sense of optimism after yesterday’s nifty deal pulled by Paul Holmgren.

In recent past, it’s simply been about the Eagles’ preseason, and the newest annual tradition of predicting the health of the franchise quarterback and predicting if this is finally the year that Andy Reid overcomes his allergy to running the ball.

Regardless of where the summer leads you – be it the heat exhaustion of watching the Fightins’, watching Billy the King get barbequed come draft time, participating in a day at the beach with the Flyers’ open checkbook or even camping out at the Eagles… um, training camp – the end of the school year also signifies final grades.

So here they are, broken into four categories (classes?): Current State (where they stand at this time), Future (youth movement, cap space and other opportunities to improve), Management/Ownership and Overall Grade.

(Parents, make sure to sign off on these and return.)
