Soul release pair of players

By John McMullen

(The Phanatic Magazine) - The Philadelphia Soul released fullback John Peaua and defensive back Nick Ward on Tuesday.

Peaua, who was signed by the Soul on February 25, spent the entire season on injured reserve with various injuries.

Ward was inked by the Soul on May 5 and played in three games this season, totaling three tackles.

Meanwhile, linebacker/fullback Clifton Smith was named the AFL's Ironman of the Week after totaling five rushes for nine yards and one touchdown, plus two tackles and a key fumble recovery on special teams as the Soul (11-3) defeated the Dallas Desperados (11-3), 71-64, on Saturday.

Smith recorded the Soul's second rushing touchdown of the game with 5:25 remaining in the game to give Philadelphia a 63-57 lead.

With 50 seconds remaining and the Soul leading 71-64, Smith recovered a fumble by Dallas fullback Josh White on the Desperados 20-yard line during the kickoff, which allowed Philadelphia to retain possession and secure the victory.
