Here's the skinny on the Phillies first round pick, 19-year-old third baseman Anthony Hewitt.
Hewitt, 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, played for Salisbury (CT) School where he batted .536 in 56 games. Among his 30 hits were nine doubles, two triples and eight home runs. A right-handed hitter, he drove in 19 runs, scored 30 and stole 10 bases.
At Salisbury, he was a shortstop-outfielder and pitcher. The Phillies view him as a third baseman.
Among the several reports filed by Phillies area scout Gene Schall: “Explosive-type player with excellent athletic abilities. Quick bat that can drive the ball to all fields. Potential to be a tape measure-type home run hitter. Good makeup. Physically he compares to a younger Ron Gant.”
Seven other members of the Phillies scouting staff also saw Hewitt play over the past two years.
