Even though he won't be participating in the All-Star Game this year, Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard will make his presence felt in San Francisco, as he has decided to defend his Home Run Derby crown.
Howard won the contest last year after crushing 24 long balls. Pitching to him was bullpen coach Ramon Henderson , who also took the mound when former Phillie Bobby Abreu won in 2005. Henderson will also join Howard for this year's edition.
This year's Home Run Derby will take place on July 9 at the Giants' AT&T Park.
"It was fun last year and an honor to be invited back, whether I'm on the team or not," Howard told the Phillies' official Web site.
After a slow start to the season, Howard has begun to get back to his MVP form. On the year, he has his average up to .253 with 19 homers and 57 RBI. He had 28 home runs before the All-Star break last year.
