PHILADELPHIA – Temple head coach Al Golden has been named a semifinalist for the 2009 George Munger College Coach of the Year Award as well as a candidate for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award.
Last week, Golden was named to the Watch List for the Paul “Bear” Bryant College Football Coach of the Year Award.
In his fourth season at Temple, Golden has guided the Owls to six consecutive wins through the first eight games. During his tenure, Golden has revamped the football program from top to bottom, on and off the field. In 2006 and 2007, he fielded the youngest teams in the nation.
The 21st Munger Award is sponsored by the Maxwell Football Club. The winner will be announced in December. The formal awards presentation will be held on Friday, March 5, 2010, at Harrah’s Entertainment Complex in Atlantic City, N.J.
Voted on by fans, the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award is unique in that it honors the college football coach that best exemplifies responsibility and excellence on and off the field. Each winner receives $50,000 for his charitable causes, and an additional $20,000 will be donated to the alumni association of each winner’s school. In addition, the winners are recognized within a permanent exhibit at the College Football Hall of Fame.
The voting process incorporates the votes of Hall of Famers as well as media members and fans voting online at www.coachoftheyear.com.
