Union to host open tryouts

CHESTER, Pa. (October 14, 2009)—Philadelphia Union, gearing up for their inaugural season in 2010, will be holding OPEN TRYOUTS this fall for athletes who believe they have the skills and stamina to make it in Major League Soccer. Players must sign up online and will get to attract the attention of Team Manager Peter Nowak and his staff in two-day sessions, the first in mid-November and another in early December.

“This finally answers what has been one of most recurring questions since we were first awarded our entry into MLS as its 16th team,” explained Nick Sakiewicz, Philadelphia Union CEO & Operating partner. “It is our hope that we will find that unfinished product or gifted but unattached young player that we can mold into a productive member of our team, in the same town that helped discover ‘The Invincible’ Vince Papale.

“It’s a little storybook, but while Peter Nowak has been traveling around the world scouting talent, it’s also incumbent upon us to look around every corner we can locally,” continued Sakiewicz.”In soccer, you just never know where you will find someone who grew up playing the world’s game.”

While the rosters of MLS clubs are full of international stars that play regularly for their national teams, there is that one-in-a-million chance that someone will emerge from these trials with an opportunity to play their way onto the team. But they will have their work cut out for them.

The first session is set for Mercer County Park, Field #1 in Trenton, NJ on Saturday November 14th. The session begins at 8 AM. Team Manager Peter Nowak and his Philadelphia Union technical staff will then identify athletes they want to invite back for another look at the same location the following day.

Session two will take place at the University of Pennsylvania’s Rhodes Field on Saturday, December 5th, and will once again kick off at 8 AM. Similar to the first session in November, it will be invitees only, as selected by Philadelphia Union staff, on Sunday the 6th at the same location.

Spectators will be admitted, but must stay off the field in designated locations at all times.

“This is very serious business for us and we will demand that players come to us in shape and eager to work hard,” said Peter Nowak, Philadelphia Union Team Manager. “Our entire staff will be there, looking very hard to identify players with the potential to help us in our inaugural season. Those invited back for the Sunday sessions will likely experience the workout of their lives!”

There is a $30 registration fee and each player will receive a Philadelphia Union T-Shirt. While athletes must register online through Philadelphia Union’s website and must select one site only. No exceptions. Registration is limited, so please register early. To register or for more information, please click on: www.philadelphiaunion.com.

Philadelphia Union’s first-ever First Kick will be March 25, 2010 vs. Seattle at the Sounders’ Qwest Field. The club’s home opener vs. D.C. United will be April 10, 2010 at Lincoln Financial Field.
