The Phillies have placed their struggling closer, Brad Lidge, on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right knee.
The move is retroactive to June 7.
Lidge has a record of 0-3 with 13 saves and a miserable 7.27 earned run average in 28 relief appearances this season.
He was perfect in 41 save opportunities last year, but has blown six of his 19 chances in 2009.
In 72 games last season, his first with Philadelphia, Lidge was 2-0 with 1.95 ERA. He was also 7-for-7 in save chances during the postseason and recorded the final out in the World Series against Tampa Bay to give the Phillies their second championship.
The Phillies filled the roster spot by selecting the contract of catcher Paul Bako from Double-A Reading. He signed a minor league contract with the Phillies on May 18.
In 10 games with Reading, Bako was hitting .357 with 10 runs batted in.
