Sixers name Ruland assistant coach

Philadelphia, PA (Phanatic Magazine) - The Philadelphia 76ers hired Jeff Ruland as an assistant coach Friday.

Ruland, an ex-Sixers player, replaces another former Sixer, Henry Bibby. Bibby's contract was not renewed.

A two-time All-Star during his playings days, Ruland was acquired by the Sixers in June 1986 as part of a deal which sent Moses Malone to the Washington Bullets. A series of knee injuries forced Ruland to retire after just five games with the team, however.

Ruland attempted a comeback with the Sixers in 1991-92 but suffered a torn Achilles after appearing in just 13 games.

Following his second retirement, Ruland returned to the Sixers as an assistant coach for the 1993-94 campaign under Fred Carter.

“That I am able to add a coach with the experience and credentials of Jeff Ruland to my staff is exciting,” Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks said. “He’ll be an invaluable resource for our players - particularly our big men - and an asset to the organization as a whole.”

“I’m excited to rejoin the 76ers and have the opportunity to help the organization reach the goal of winning a championship, as well as return to a city that is very close to me and my family,” Ruland added,

A former head coach at the college level with Iona, Ruland led the Gaels to two NCAA Tournament berths in nine seasons. He most recently served as head coach of the Albuquerque Thunderbirds of the NBA’s D-League
