Winter of (Dis)Content: Rumors From Orlando

The Phanatic has learned through sources at the Winter Meetings that Texas is hot on the trail of outfielder Aaron Rowand. What is the asking price for the gritty outfielder?

It appears to be Josh Rupe, a 24-year-old arm with good stuff and adequate success in minimal MLB appearances. A deal is not close, but the signs are at least promising that Pat Gillick realizes a weakness and is trying to correct it via a trade.

John Marzano on WIP this morning feels the Phillies will sign Miguel Batista this week and still attempt to push Pat Burrell on the San Francisco Giants. Batting fifth...third baseman, Wes Helms!

All of the chips are on the table. Sources told The Phanatic that Manny Ramirez can be had...for Cole Hamels. Sources indicated Boston is unimpressed with Philadelphia's minor league arms and would want the child prodigy in a trade. So, do you trade Cole for Manny and sign Miguel Batista, who according to Randy Miller of the Bucks County Courier-Times, told the Phils he will only sign as a starter or closer?

It's coming fast and furious. Our source did confirm a Rocky Mountain News report earlier in the day that the Phillies have talked about the possibility of luring Barry Zito. Whether or not the southpaw would come to Philly is another question, but even speaking about it deviates from Gillick's supposed hard-rock stand that front of the rotation hurlers and free agency mix like oil and water.

More later...

Dear Jared,
SOURCES! I've been writing to you for two weeks telling you that it was going to take Cole Hamels to get Manny. Don't pretend that you've come up with this on your own or that you got it from somebody else. Give me my credit damn it. That's all I want!
Yours truly,
Theo Epstein

You did come up with it first Theo. I'll give my hat off to you.
