Sources: Penn State suspends Ed Johnson for Outback Bowl

The Phanatic

A source close to the Penn State football program told The Phanatic Monday night that defensive tackle Ed Johnson has been kicked off the football team.

Since Johnson is a senior, he theoretically is "suspended" for the bowl game, though our source vouched for the fact that Johnson is no longer with the team.

The source would NOT confirm a story told to The Phanatic early Monday morning that Johnson had failed a drug test, instead calling the suspension "a violation of team and university policy, nothing more and nothing less."

Cornerback A.J. Wallace's name was also mentioned in the story, but the source had no knowledge that Wallace was involved.

An email to The Phanatic early Monday by a member of the Penn State community stated that both Johnson and Wallace had failed drug tests.

Johnson had been playing his best football of the season after missing the entire 2005 campaign for violating unspecified university policy.

Wallace, on the other hand, still has three years left in Happy Valley. If the incident is true, he could have a hard time crawling out of head coach Joe Paterno's doghouse (see: Austin Scott).

Penn State is set to face Tennessee in the Outback Bowl on New Year's Day.
