Flyers obtain Zhitnik from Islanders

The Phanatic

The New York Islanders acquired defenseman Freddy Meyer and a conditional third-round draft pick from the Philadelphia Flyers, in exchange for defenseman Alexei Zhitnik on Saturday.

Meyer, who is currently out of action with a back injury, has recorded two goals and three assists in 25 games this season for Philadelphia.

In his rookie year last season with the Flyers, Meyer netted six goals and picked up 21 assists in 57 games.

Zhitnik has two goals and nine assists in 30 games this season for the Islanders and will bring a veteran presence to a young Philadelphia defense corps.

"Alexei is a very durable player," said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. "He can play a lot of minutes. He has a wealth of experience. We think that he can really upgrade our defense."
