Rule V Trade...aah, the Grand Plan

Orlando, FL – The Baltimore Orioles selected right-handed pitcher Alfredo Simon with the 5th pick of the Major League phase of the Rule 5 Draft, held Thursday as part of baseball’s annual Winter Meetings.

Simon was then traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for catcher Adam Donachie and cash.

Donachie, 22, was selected by the Phillies from Kansas City earlier in the day in the Rule 5 Draft. He split the 2006 season between the Royals’ Class A High Desert and AA Wichita affiliates, batting a combined .247 with 8 home runs and 31 RBI in 91 games. Simon split last season between AAA Fresno and Class A San Jose in the San Francisco organization and went 2-10 with a 6.62 ERA in 28 games.
