(Phanatic Magazine) - Tennessee Titans wide receiver O.J. Murdock has died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in his hometown of Tampa.
The Tampa Police Department confirmed that Murdock was taken to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition after he was found in his car in front of Middleton High School around 8:30 a.m. An updated release confirmed his death at 10:43 a.m.
"We are shocked and saddened to hear of O.J. Murdock’s death this morning," the Titans said in a release. "In his brief time here, a number of our players, coaches and staff had grown close to O.J., and this is a difficult time for them. He spent the last year battling back from an Achilles injury as he prepared for this year’s training camp. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends as they try to cope with this tragedy."
Murdock spent all of last season on injured reserve last season with the Titans after injuring his Achilles' and did not report to training camp on Friday.
When asked about his absence, Tennessee coach Mike Munchak claimed it was for "personal reasons."
In a macabre coincidence, Murdock's teammate in college at South Carolina, fellow wide receiver Kenny McKinley, was found dead on Sept. 20, 2010, also from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Arapahoe, Colorado County Sheriff's Department later concluded that McKinley's suicide was related to depression over debt, injury and post-playing career concerns.
