PHILADELPHIA (July 8, 2012) – The Eastern Division Champion, Philadelphia Soul (14-3), led by Derrick Ross’ five touchdowns, set a franchise record for the most regular-season victories (14) as they defeated the Spokane Shock (8-8), 62-48, in front of 7,590 fans at the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday night.
“We’re taking this one game at a time. We will use the next couple of weeks to get healthy and prepare for our final game of the season,” said Soul head coach Doug Plank. “Tonight’s win just adds to our momentum as the season comes to an end and playoffs begin.”
Soul QB Dan Raudabaugh finished the game by connecting on 16-of-22 passes for 179 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. Ross registered 10 carries and two receptions for a total of 108 yards (81 rushing) and five touchdowns. WR Donovan Morgan added five receptions and one carry for a total of 65 yards and a touchdown. Larry Brackins finished with four receptions for 46 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Kent Richardson had 4.5 tackles and two interceptions, setting the franchise record for most interceptions in a season (14). LaRico Stevenson had 8.0 tackles and an interception.
Spokane’s QB Kyle Rowley connected 29-of-48 passes for 325 yards, seven touchdowns and four interceptions. WR Adron Tennel had 13 receptions for 141 yards and four touchdowns. Rod Harper added nine receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown and Jeffrey Solomon caught four passes for 36 yards and two touchdowns.
Just 14 seconds after kickoff, Jeff Hughley scored the first touchdown of the game with a 55-yard kickoff return. Spokane responded with touchdown receptions by Harper and Solomon. The Soul followed up with a nine-yard touchdown reception by Brackins, his franchise-record-setting 70th touchdown in Soul uniform. Rowley completed a 47-yard touchdown pass to Tennell to end the quarter with the Shock leading 21-14.
Harper and Solomon added two more Spokane touchdowns in the second quarter, but three touchdown runs by Ross and another touchdown by Brackins gave the Soul a 42-34 lead at the end of the first half.
The third quarter scoring began with a four-yard touchdown reception by Morgan followed by a 20-yard touchdown reception by Tennell. Ross’ catch and 15-yard run for a touchdown brought the quarter to an end with the Soul leading 55-41.
Each team added one touchdown in the final quarter. Tennell caught a nine-yard touchdown reception and Ross had a 2-yard touchdown carry, his fifth touchdown of the game, sealing the Soul’s 62-48 victory.
The Soul will face the Utah Blaze on Sunday, July 22 at 6:05 p.m. ET at the Wells Fargo Center for their final game of the regular season. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on UStream at www.ustream.tv/philadelphiasoul.
