(Phanatic Magazine) - A weekend sweep at the hands of the Atlanta Braves has almost surely positioned the Phillies as sellers before Tuesday's trade deadline and KPIX-TV in San Francisco has reported that the Giants have a "deal in place" for Philadelphia right fielder Hunter Pence, pending ownership approval.
Giants' VP Bobby Evans texted KPIX-TV, however, and claimed no deal is done yet.
The speculation around the trade is focused on the Giants' second ranked organizational prospect, catcher Tommy Joseph.
Joseph, who just turned 21, is currently in Double-A, where he is batting .263 with eight home runs and 38 RBI. He figures as the eventual replacement for aging All-Star Carlos Ruiz, who is having a career offensive year at 33.
Pence leads in the Phillies in games played (100), runs (59), hits (106), home runs (17), RBI (59), walks (37), and total bases (176) in 2012 but his often undisciplined play has left him open to criticism.
The 29-year old outfielder has batted .287 with 28 home runs and 94 RBIs in 154 games, basically one full season, since being acquired from Houston at the trade deadline last season.
