The Eagles have finally had enough and placed enigmatic right tackle Shawn Andrews on season-ending injured reserve.
The team needed to create a roster spot for Jeff Garcia and reportedly put wide receiver Hank Baskett on the trading block. Instead, they wisely gave up on a guy who simply doesn't want to play football.
“It’s disappointing to lose any player for the entire season, but we have full confidence in the other lineman we have on this roster to help this team succeed," coach Andy Reid said. "We wish Shawn all the best as he recovers and rehabilitates from this injury.”
Andrews, who played in just two games last season, has battled depression and a back injury. After missing most of last year's training camp with clinical depression, Andrews tweaked his back in Week 2 against Dallas and never returned to the lineup.
This year, his back flared on the first conditioning run of camp. He eventually returned to practice and claimed he would be ready for the opener but he was shut down last week and the Birds finally washed their hands of him today. The team also noted Andrews was "cleared to play" on its own Web site.
Now, Andrews has plenty of time to get his "Michael Phelps on>"
Winston Justice started in Andrews' place against Carolina and was serviceable but the team did give him a lot of help. Veteran Jon Runyan will likely be brought back sometime this week.
