Eagles sign Wilhelm, Babin

The Eagles have officially signed defensive end Jason Babin and linebacker Matt Wilhelm. To make room on the 80-man roster for both players along with first round pick Jeremy Maclin, the Eagles released defensive tackle Jervonte Jackson, cornerback Courtney Robinson and wide receiver Marcus Thigpen.

A first round draft choice of the Houston Texans (27th overall) in 2004, the 29-year old Babin (6-3, 267) has amassed 156 total tackles, 15 sacks and forced two fumbles in his five-year career. Babin has also spent time with the Seahawks and Chiefs.

The two-time MAC Defensive Player of the Year, Babin set school records at Western Michigan with 38 sacks and 75 tackles for loss. He also earned All-America honors during his senior season after posting 115 tackles, 15 sacks and 33 tackles for loss.

A fourth round selection in 2004 NFL Draft, Wilhelm (6-4, 245) spent the first six seasons of his career with the San Diego Chargers and totaled 220 tackles, two sacks and six interceptions. The 28-year-old Wilhelm was released by the Chargers on July 24, 2009.

A former Ohio State Buckeye, Wilhelm made the switch from outside to inside linebacker during his sophomore season and promptly became one of the team’s premier players. As a junior, Wilhelm earned the Randy Gradishar Award which is given to the team’s top linebacker. He then helped lead Ohio State to a National Championship during his senior season with a career-high 121 tackles.
