The Philadelphia Eagles claimed S/KR J.R. Reed off waivers from the New York Giants and LB Pago Togafau (pronounced PONG-oh TONG-uh-fow) off waivers from the Arizona Cardinals.
To make room on the 53-man roster, the Eagles released LB Akeem Jordan and S Marcus Paschal.
The 25-year-old Reed is in his second stint with the Eagles after being a fourth-round draft choice of the club in 2004. During an impressive rookie season as the club's primary kickoff returner, Reed averaged 23.1 yards on 33 returns. A freak accident during the 2005 offseason, however, left Reed with nerve damage which affected movement in his lower leg and foot and forced him to miss the entire 2005 campaign. He returned to action with the Eagles during the 2006 preseason but was released on September 3, 2006, Reed went on to see action in 6 games with the St. Louis Rams later that year. He also spent time with Atlanta in 2006 and with the Giants this summer before being released as part of their final roster cutdown yesterday.
Togafau was signed by the Cardinals as a rookie free agent following the 2007 draft from Idaho State. The 5-10, 250-pound linebacker recorded 16 tackles in four preseason games for Arizona. He led the team in tackles during each of his last three seasons at Idaho State and finished his collegiate career with 361 stops. Togafau, 23, is a product of Long Beach Poly HS (CA).
