Philadelphia 76ers interim coach Tony DiLeo has withdrawn his name from consideration for the permanent coaching job.
Translation?
GM Ed Stefanski made it clear he wasn't getting the job.
"Tony and I had a meeting scheduled for this afternoon, during which time he informed me of his decision that he would not return as head coach next season," Stefanski said. "I want to thank Tony for the commendable job he did this season under some unique and difficult circumstances, including leading us to the playoffs."
DiLeo replaced Maurice Cheeks after the Sixers stumbled to a 9-14 start. They went 32-27 under DiLeo and earned a playoff spot before bowing to Orlando in six games.
After an embarrassing loss in Game 6 at the Wachovia Center, some players were critical of DiLeo especially veteran center Theo Ratliff.
DiLeo will return to his job as a senior vice president and assistant general manager, where he helps with player procurement.
Stefanski will begin to search for new head coach immediately. Already names like Doug Collins, Avery Johnson, Eddie Jordan and Tom Thibodeau have surfaced as potential candidates.
