Philly likes its Unions

We have lost a little Soul, picked up a little Passion and now have another Union.

The City of Philadelphia was awarded a MLS franchise a year ago, which is scheduled to begin play in a brand new stadium in Chester for the 2010 season.

Voting on the team’s name finished a few weeks ago and the results were scheduled to be unveiled May 11 at City Hall.

The folks at MLS Rumors did some digging and have the news earlier.

The team will be known as the Philadelphia Union and will feature the colors of their fan club, the Sons of Ben, which was started back in January of 2007, over a year before the team was awarded to Philly.

The colors are also a take off of the city of Philadelphia’s traditional light blue and yellow and the team’s motto will be “Invgite aut Perite” which is Latin for “Join or Die,” a take off of the snake that Ben Franklin put in the first political cartoon.
