Phils ink Giles to minor league deal

The Phillies signed veteran infielder Marcus Giles to a minor league contract deal worth $600,000 according to the Denver Post.

Giles did not play in 2008. In 2007, the San Diego native hit .229 with four home runs and 39 RBI in 116 games for the Padres.

Over his last five seasons in the Major Leagues, Giles' batting average has dropped, from .316 in 2003, to .311, .291, .262 and .229 in '04, '05, '06 and '07, respectively.

Giles' contract calls for $13,000 a month in the Minors, and he can request his release if not on the 25-man roster by July 1, according to the Post.
