Phils lock up Hamels with three-year deal

The Philadelphia Phillies have reportedly locked up World Series MVP Cole Hamels to a multi-year contract, avoiding arbitration with the star left-hander.

According to the New York Post, Hamels has agreed to a three-year deal worth $20.5 million. The 25-year-old San Diego native will earn $4.35 million in 2009, $6.65 million in '10 and $9.5 million in '11.

One of the best young pitchers in baseball, Hamels went 14-10 with a 3.09 earned run average in 33 starts last season, and then excelled in the postseason, going 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five starts.

The 17th overall pick of the 2002 draft, Hamels is 38-23 with a 3.43 ERA in 84 career starts for the Phillies.
