Vikings' Peterson wins Maxwell Club's Bert Bell Award

On the heels of setting a Vikings single-season record and leading the NFL in rushing with 1,760 yards, Adrian Peterson has won the 50th annual Bert Bell Award as professional football player of the year.

The announcement was made today by Maxwell Football Club president and former Eagles QB Ron Jaworski.

"It's an honor to be listed among such great players from past years and humbling at the same time,” said Peterson. “I thank the Maxwell Club and the people who voted for me, but I really want to thank the big boys up front and the receivers out wide fighting for every block. I'm lucky to be surrounded by a group of guys who are the best teammates in the League.

Individual awards and records are great, but making some noise in the playoffs and reaching our ultimate goal is the most important thing for us right now."

The award is named in honor of Bell, one-time NFL Commissioner and founder of the Maxwell Club. NFL owners, football personnel, head and assistant coaches, members of the Maxwell Football Club as well as national and local print/electronic media members vote on the award, which is presented at the club's annual football banquet.

Aside from claiming the NFL’s rushing title in 2008, Peterson also scored 10 touchdowns and logged 10 games with more than 100 yards rushing. But most importantly, Peterson led the Vikings to their first 10-win season and division title since 2000.

Tom Brady won the Bert Bell award after leading the Patriots to a 16-0 regular season record in 2007. Other recent winners have been LaDainian Tomlinson (2006), Shaun Alexander (2005) and Peyton Manning (2003, 2004).

Former Vikings to win the award include Randall Cunningham (1998) and Fran
Tarkenton (1975). Norm Van Brocklin won the award in 1960, one year before becoming the first Vikings coach in franchise history.
