Phils lock up Lidge

Phillies Closer Brad Lidge signed a $37.5 million, three-year contract extension with the team on Sunday.

Lidge, who is 2-0 and 19-of-19 in save opportunities with an 0.75 ERA in his first season in Philadelphia, was scheduled to become a free agent after the season.

The 32-year-old right-hander is has been dominant, compiling 47 strikeouts in 35 innings, He set a franchise record by converting his first 19 save opportunities this season and didn't allow an earned run in his first 17 appearances (17 innings), which was the second-longest by a Phillies pitcher to start his career with the team.

The Phils orginally acquired Lidge from the Houston Astros in a five-player trade this offseason.
