In a somewhat dubious move, especially after interviewing sought-after assistants Ron Rivera and Russ Grimm, the Arizona Cardinals are on the verge of naming Mike Sherman their next head football coach, a league source told The Phanatic on Thursday.
First reported on the NFL site ProFootballTalk.com, we then placed a call into our NFL source and got a resounding, "I'll call you back." Five minutes later, a phone call confirmed the initial report.
Ex-Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman is on the verge of becoming the new head coach in Arizona. A contract has not been finalized between the two sides as of 12:00 p.m. (et) on Thursday, but unless either has a change of heart, the ink should dry soon.
Sherman coached Green Bay from 2000-2005, and becomes the third coach in succession with NFC background to take the job with the Cardinals. Dennis Green had a mostly successful stint with the Minnesota Vikings, and Dave McGinnis led the Chicago Bears defense prior to becoming Arizona head coach.
Sherman getting the job means Rivera and Grimm didn't, lending speculation that Grimm could become the next head coach in Pittsburgh. Unless the Steelers pull a rabbit out of their hat like they did in hiring Bill Cowher back in 1992, various members of the media -- us included -- feel the job will be given to either Grimm or current offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt.
Rivera, who can not be hired until after the Bears are eliminated from the playoffs, also interviewed for the Steelers job, but his name hasn't been mentioned in connection with the Miami coaching vacancy.
