PHILADELPHIA (January 14, 2010)—With the 2010 Major League Soccer SuperDraft looming, Philadelphia Union continue to maneuver, making their second deal in as many days. The MLS expansion club announced that it has sent allocation money to FC Dallas in exchange for the #6 overall pick in today’s SuperDraft.
“The opportunity to move up and select another player who we believe might help us build our foundation was a chance well worth taking,” said Team Manager Peter Nowak.
With this latest move, Philadelphia Union now have three of the first seven picks in the SuperDraft for collegiate players, with perhaps the best crop of young athletes ever to choose from.
“Conditions were not ideal at the combine in Florida last week, but Peter and his technical staff saw some things and some people that they targeted,” said Philadelphia Union CEO & Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz. “From that point on, we listened to others and have now made a couple deals that will give us a running start in establishing the kind of team and organization that gives maximum effort every time out on the pitch. That’s what our supporters want and deserve.”
Philadelphia Union’s first-ever First Kick will take place March 25, 2010 vs. Seattle Sounders FC at Seattle’s Qwest Field. The club’s home opener will be April 10, 2010 vs. D.C. United at Lincoln Financial Field.
