The Philadelphia Phillies made it official on Friday and signed outfielder Shane Victorino to a three-year, $22 million contract extension through the 2012 season.
Victorino had been eligible for salary arbitration and his new deal will buy out his remaining two arbitration-eligible seasons in addition to his first year of free agency.
The Hawaii native has become an offensive sparkplug for Philadelphia since the team selected him in the 2004 Rule 5 Draft. In 2009, his fourth year as a starter, Victorino batted .292 with 13 triples, 10 homers, 62 RBI and 25 stolen bases. He was also named an All-Star for the first time and matched his career best with 102 runs scored, as the Phillies won their second straight NL pennant.
Victorino, a Gold Glove winner each of the past two seasons, is a career .284 hitter with 32 triples, 44 homers, 224 RBI and 109 stolen bases in 643 games -- all but 36 with the Phillies.
