Phils extend Manuel

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, fresh off the club's first world championship since 1980, was rewarded with a contract extension that will keep him with the team through 2011.

General manager Ruben Amaro announced Tuesday that the team has picked up the 2010 option on Manuel's previous extension and added one more year to the contract for 2011.

Under the fourth-year bench boss, the Phillies won their second consecutive NL East title in 2008 and went on an 11-3 run through the playoffs, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers (3-1), Los Angeles Dodgers (4-1) and Tampa Bay Rays (4-1) on the way to a World Series title.

Manuel finished second in the 2008 NL Manager of the Year voting and has compiled a 354-294 mark with the Phillies in four years. In seven years as manager of Philadelphia and Cleveland, Manuel has a record of 574-485, with three division titles and a 13-9 career playoff record.
