NJ state trooper gets five years in Tocchet betting case

Former New Jersey state trooper James Harney, who admitted to running a sports betting ring with ex-Flyers star Rick Tocchet, was sentenced to five years in state prison Friday.

Harney struck a plea agreement with authorities a year ago and could have received as much as to seven years in prison for conspiracy, promoting gambling and official misconduct. Harney is eligible for parole in a year.

When he entered the plea deal, Harney implicated Tocchet as an equal partners in the betting ring. Tocchet is scheduled to be sentenced later this month and may avoid prison under terms of his plea.
