Six weeks after undergoing surgery on his right thumb, Phillies All-Star second baseman Chase Utley has been cleared to start hitting.
Utley is still scheduled to miss a full eight weeks, however, and will need a rehab assignment before returning to the Phillies.
Utley tore a ligament in his thumb sliding into second base in a game at Cincinnati on June 28. He’s batting .277 with 11 homers and 37 RBI on the season.
