The Phillies announced on Tuesday that All-Star first baseman Ryan Howard has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a moderate left ankle sprain, while outfielder John Mayberry Jr. has been recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
The 30-year-old Howard suffered the injury in the first inning of Sunday's win over Washington, as he appeared to turn the ankle while trying to get back to second base after over-rounding it.
Howard, who was in an 0-for-14 slump at the plate prior to going down with the injury, is hitting .292 with 23 homers and 81 runs batted in through 104 games this year.
Mayberry, 26, had a taste of big league experience with the Phillies in 2009, appearing in 39 contests. Over that span, the right-handed hitter clubbed four home runs and knocked in eight while batting .211.
