Howard out 6-to-8 weeks with meniscus tear

On a whim, if you decided to test the will of fate, and, oh...I don't know...made a bet with someone that Ryan Howard wouldn't hit 20 home runs this year, you're looking pretty, pretty good right about now.

Howard's time away from the Phillies lineup was given an unfortunate boost on Monday. The 33-year-old slugger has a torn meniscus in his left knee that will require surgery.

Expected recovery time is 6-to-8 weeks.

Philly had placed Howard on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with what was initially termed left knee inflammation.

Howard, who has been dealing with knee discomfort for several weeks, was batting .266 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI over 80 games this season.

Darin Ruf, recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, will now get an extended look at the major league level.
Over 82 games in the minors this season, Ruf hit .266 with seven homers and 46 RBI.
