Howard has successful knee surgery

Prior to squaring off against the Washington National in the third portion of a four-game home set, the Phillies announced that first baseman Ryan Howard underwent successful surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Michael Ciccotti at the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia on Wednesday morning. Recovery time is estimated at 6-to-8 weeks.

"It went very well and very straight forward. As good news goes, this is as good as we can get," said Phils general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr.

Darin Ruf, recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, will continue to play first in Howard's absence.
