Union selects La Salle's Richeter in Supplemental Draft

Philadelphia Union selected midfielder Ryan Richter from La Salle University,  defender Josh Walburn from Princeton University and midfielder Matt Marcin from Providence College in the 2011 Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft on Tuesday. The Union used all three of their selections, picking Richter fifth overall, Walburn 23rd overall and Marcin 41st overall.

A Southampton, Pa. native, Richter, 22, was recently named Offensive Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year by the Atlantic 10 Conference after scoring a league-best 14 goals in 2010. In his final two seasons at La Salle, Richter racked up 51 points on a total of 21 goals and nine assists. In total, Richter registered 28 goals (fifth all-time at La Salle) and 13 assists (10th all-time) for 69 points (fifth all-time). Richter was also named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team.

Walburn, 21, was named First Team All-Ivy the past two seasons, as well as First Team All-Region in 2010. The Princeton product played as a defender, midfielder and forward in college, tallying six goals in each of his last two seasons. Walburn also added seven assists during his senior year and five assists during his junior season. Over his four year college career, Walburn registered 17 goals and 13 assists, 43 points in total.

Hailing from Wilmington, Delaware, Marcin, 22, tallied 10 goals and four assists as a senior at Providence. The FC Delco product earned All-Big East First Team honors in 2010, and was also named to the Big East All-Tournament Team and All-Northeast Region First Team. Marcin led the Friars to the BIG EAST Championship Final in 2010, falling to Louisville in the penalty round. Over his four year college career, Marcin registered 22 goals and nine assists, 53 points in total.
