Phils hire new bench coach

The Philadelphia Phillies hired Pete Mackanin as their bench coach on Friday.

Mackanin replaces Jimy Williams, who resigned shortly after the team won the World Series.

Mackanin, 57, served as a scout for the New York Yankees this past year. He had managed the Cincinnati Reds for the final three months of the 2007 season, guiding the team to a 41-39 mark.

In 2005, Mackanin also was interim manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates for the final 26 games of the season.

Also Sam Perlozzo, the former manager of the Baltimore Orioles who was hired by the team last week, was named the third base coach.
