Eskin, honored for his 32 years on the air, credited the late Jim O’Brien for encouraging him to go into sports broadcasting while Eskin worked as O’Brien’s engineer at WFIL in the early 70s.
Mike Schmidt, Ike Reese, Hugh Douglas, Larry Bowa, Pete Rose, Greg Luzinski, Dallas Green, Tim McCarver, Beasley Reece, Andy Reid, Jon Gruden, and John Harbaugh participated in a video tribute to Eskin, as well as Eskin’s son, “Spike,” who is a disc jockey on WYSP.
St. Joe’s basketball head coach Phil Martelli presented Eskin with his award, and others at the luncheon included former Sixers general manager, Billy King, former Eagles general manager, Jim Murray, and college basketball coaches Fran Dunphy of Temple and Jay Wright of Villanova.
Eskin’s career has included radio stations WFIL, WWDB, WMMR, and WIP; and television stations KYW-3, Channel 29, and NBC10.
Interesting that the award comes at the time that Eskin's ratings, especially in the key mail demographics, are eroding a bit since ESPN950 went to Mike Missinelli in the afternoons.
