A couple of years ago the Sixers thought Thaddeus Young had a chance to develop into an All-Star type player. Now, the team has decided against extending his rookie contract to a fifth year, making Young a restricted free agent July 1, 2011.
The Sixers could still retain Young, the 12th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, and will hold a right of first refusal on any offer the forward may get from another team but the move is a clear indication on where Young currently stands.
A lack of development on the defensive end and the glass was compounded last year when Young struggled mightily in Eddie Jordan's Princeton Offense.
Doug Collins considered Young a reclamation project but any progress has been slow at this point although his shooting touch seems to have returned. Young has been coming off the bench, averaging 10.7 points and 4.7 rebounds in just 23 minutes a night. His 58.3 shooting percentage is by far the best on the team, however.
