The Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday brought back Juan Samuel to serve as the team's third-base coach and outfield instructor.
Sam Perlozzo, the third base coach last season, will shift to first base, replacing Davey Lopes. Coaches Rich Dubee (pitching), Greg Gross (hitting), Pete Mackanin (bench) and Mick Billmeyer (bullpen) will also return in 2011.
The 49-year-old Samuel spent the previous four years (2007-10) as third base coach for the Baltimore Orioles, including a brief stint as interim manager last season (17-34) following the dismissal of Dave Trembley.
"I feel fortunate that we were able to add someone of Juan's stature to our coaching staff," said Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel. "He was a tremendous major league player and a big part of Phillies history and I'm looking forward to him passing on his knowledge of the game to our players. He's a great addition to our organization."
A three-time National League All-Star, Samuel played seven seasons with the Phillies (1983-89), batting .263 with 100 home runs, 413 RBI and 249 stolen bases which included a franchise rookie record of 72 in 1984. The native of the Dominican Republic also led the NL that season with 19 triples.
His best season in Philadelphia was 1987, which saw the second baseman hit .272 with 28 homers and 100 RBI with a league-high 15 triples and 37 doubles.
