Temple University has reached an agreement on new long-term contracts for its highly-successful men’s basketball and football coaches, Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw announced. Temple and Fran Dunphy have agreed to a new eight-year contract which extends the Owls’ men’s basketball coach’s existing contract through the 2018 season, while the University and Al Golden have agreed to a new five-year contract which extends the Owls’ football coach’s existing contract through the 2014 season.
“We are very pleased to be able to reach new long-term agreements that will keep Fran Dunphy and Al Golden in charge of our two most visible programs,” Bradshaw said.
“There is not a better coach, educator, or person than Fran Dunphy. He represents the best of Temple University, Philadelphia college basketball, and Owls’ Athletics. As for Al Golden, no other coach has so successfully turned around the culture of a Division IA football program as he has accomplished at Temple. In the classroom, in the community, and on the football field, the performance of Temple Football has earned national recognition.”
“I am very thankful for the opportunity to continue to serve as the Temple University men's basketball coach,” Dunphy said. “The past four years have been special and my staff and I are already looking forward to the 2010-11 season.”
Dunphy, who just finished his fourth season as the Owls’ coach, earned his first career conference Coach of the Year honor when he was tabbed as the 2010 Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year. He also was named the Eastern College Coach of the Year for the second time in the last three seasons. He was also earned NABC District Coach of the Year honors.
In 2009-10, he guided the Owls to their third straight A-10 Tournament title and first A-10 regular season championship since 2002. The Owls joined the University of Massachusetts as the only A-10 teams to win three straight A-10 titles. Temple finished with a 29-6 overall mark, the third most wins in school history, and its first national ranking since 2001. Picked tied for fifth in the preseason A-10 poll, the Owls were ranked in the Top 25 in both polls during the final 12 weeks of the season. The #12 final ranking in the Associated Press poll tied for the fifth highest in program history.
"I'm thrilled for our staff, and most especially our student-athletes, for the opportunity to continue our commitment of making our football program a vital component of the Temple Community, support the mission of the university and to strengthen the Temple Brand on a national scale," Golden said.
Named the 2009 MAC Coach of the Year, the Maxwell Club’s 2009 Tri-State Coach of the Year as well as the 2009 New Jersey Sportswriters College Coach of the Year, Golden guided the Owls to new heights in 2009, his fourth season at the helm. Temple recorded one of its best seasons in school history, finishing at 9-4 overall and tying for first place in the Mid-American Conference East Division with a 7-1 mark. It was the Owls’ best conference finish since joining the league in 2003. TU won a single-season record nine consecutive games and recorded its first winning season since 1990. Temple also participated in its first bowl in 30 years, playing UCLA in the EagleBank Bowl.
The Owls have also received recognition for their community service efforts under Golden. In 2009, the Temple team was awarded the Robert P. Levy Community Service Award, presented by the Philadelphia Sports Congress, and has won the Athletic Department’s T.E.A.M. [Temple's Exceptional Acts for Mankind] Award for community service the past two seasons.
