Two-Face

By John McMullen
The Phanatic Magazine

Two-Face is a fictional villain with a dual personality -- An enemy of Batman in the DC Comics Universe.

He was once Harvey Dent, the DA of Gotham City and a close ally of the Dark Knight. After a criminal disfigured half of his face with acid, Dent became the insane crime boss Two-Face who would choose to do either good or evil depending on the flip of a coin.

Philadelphia has its very own Two-Face. He might not be a criminal mastermind but Ed Snider displays a similar dichotomy to fans of his sports teams.

To Flyers fans, Ed is a hero -- a never say die owner who will do anything to win. While the Stanley Cup hasn't taken up residence in the city in over 30 years, we can all at least agree it hasn't been due to a lack of effort.

In one fell swoop, Snider and his lieutenants remade a horrible hockey team yesterday. Whether the Flyers are a contender again is up for debate but they are certainly moving in the right direction.

To Sixers fans, Snider is a clod. An absentee buffoon of an owner happy to collect the riches of the NBA's massive television contract while ignoring the product he puts on the floor.

To be fair, it's a lot more difficult to make a major move in the NBA than the NHL. The rigid construct of the NBA's salary cap hamstrings you to a certain extent.

That said, isn't it funny how the great teams always seem to be able to make moves? The Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks are both in the Kevin Garnett sweepstakes despite already possessing a ton of talent and significant salary cap restraints.

And it's not just the top clubs. Look at the Sixers' competition in the woeful Atlantic Division. Boston already swung a deal for Ray Allen. New Jersey and New York are both involved in the Jermaine O'Neal sweepstakes and Toronto -- the best team in the division -- already agreed to terms with sharp-shooting role player Jason Kapono.

It seems like everyone will move mountains to try and get better. Everyone except Ed Snider's Sixers of course.

Billy King had one bullet in his chamber for 2007-08 -- Yi Jianlian. When Philly couldn't trade up and secure the Chinese star, they settled for Thaddeus Young.

"Settling" is something Ed Snider's Flyers would never do.
