Eagles respond to Waters death

The Phanatic

Former Philadelphia Eagles safety Andre Waters was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound early Monday morning. He was just 44 years old.

Waters body was found at about 1:30 a.m. in his Tampa home with a gunshot wound to his head. Toxicology reports have been ordered and results are expected back in six weeks.

A hard-hitting strong safety with the Eagles from 1984-1993, Waters amassed 910 career tackles, 15 interceptions and 3.5 sacks in 137 career games (100 starts) with the club . He posted six consecutive 100-plus tackle campaigns from 1986-91 and led the Eagles in tackles four consecutive seasons
(1988-91).

Waters was a member of the famed 1991 Eagles defense, which ranked number one across the board in terms of overall defensive yards allowed, rushing yards allowed and passing yards allowed and he earned all-NFC honors that season.

Waters played his final NFL season with Arizona in 1994, playing under head coach Buddy Ryan, who served as Eagles head coach during a large portion of Waters' career in Philadelphia.

Following his playing career, Waters went on to serve as an assistant coach at Morgan State, South Florida, Alabama State, and most recently, as the defensive coordinator at Fort Valley State in North Carolina.

"The Eagles lost a cherished member of their family today,: said team chairman Jeffrey Lurie. “Andre Waters was an undrafted free agent who carved out an 11-year NFL career, 10 of those with the Eagles. He will always be remembered as a fiery, intense competitor on the field and as a very generous man in the community. Andre had a big heart which made him play a lot bigger than his 5-11, 200-pound frame would suggest. The entire Eagles community is devastated by the loss and our thoughts and prayers will go out to his family."
