Villanova jumped out to a 13-8 lead on the strength of Maalik Wayns’ eight first quarter points but Senegal outscored the Cats 17-9 the rest of the period to build a lead it would never relinquish in a 79-65 win outside of Paris.
Senegal relied on a deep bench and a lineup that featured seven players standing taller than 6-7 in what was an intensely physical play with many whistles.
Wayns paced the Wildcats with 15 points and nine rebounds but those points came on 6-of-19 shooting from the field. Junior Mouphtaou Yarou spent much of the first half on the bench after picking up a pair of quick fouls but played well in the second half, finishing with nine points and 11 rebounds. Junior Isaiah Armwood finished with five points, including a 3-point field goal, and seven rebounds, while classmate Dominic Cheek added seven points. He too battled first half foul trouble.
One encouraging note in the second half was the play of Villanova’s newcomers. Darrun Hilliard sank three long bombs and ended the night with nine points. JayVaughn Pinkston, held scoreless in the first half, scored seven points after intermission, including five at the charity stripe. Achraf Yacoubou contributed five points and four rebounds while Markus Kennedy collected seven rebounds
