The Philadelphia Flyers have pulled the plug on the comeback hopes for defenseman and team captain Chris Pronger.
The club issued a statement during Thursday's game in Montreal.
"After consultation with respected concussion specialists Dr. Joseph Maroon and Dr. Micky Collins, it is the opinion of both doctors that Chris is suffering from severe post concussion syndrome," said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. "It is the recommendation of Doctors Maroon and Collins that Chris not return to play for the Philadelphia Flyers for the remainder of the 2011-12 season or playoffs. Chris will continue to receive treatment and therapy with the hope that he can get better."
Pronger was pronounced out indefinitely with concussion-like symptoms only six days ago, in the wake of his suffering from what was called a "mystery virus" followed by left knee surgery.
The 37-year-old also was out of action for almost three weeks after being struck in the face with the errant stick of Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mikhail Grabovsky in late October.
Pronger was the usual "force to be reckoned with" when healthy on a limited basis, totaling one goal and 12 points in 13 games this season.
