Chester, Pa. (October 22, 2010) - Philadelphia Union announced today that Cristian Arrieta has been called up to rejoin the Puerto Rican National Team to compete in the second qualifying round of the 2010 Digicel Caribbean Championship. The competition, which takes place in Graneda from October 22-27, is a tournament in the Caribbean Region of CONCACAF.
"I'm very happy to be back with the National Team and have the chance to achieve a historical result for Puerto Rico," said Arrieta. "But I'm also disappointed to miss out on the opportunity to finish the season with my teammates. I hope the team earns a result in Columbus so we can close out the year with a winning streak."
The 31-year-old helped lead the Puerto Rican National Team to three consecutive wins in Group A action of the Digicel Caribbean Cup. The 2009 USL MVP, who scored 17 goals and 7 assists between 2008-2009 with the Puerto Rico Islanders, headed home the squad's second goal for his first tally as a national team player in a 2-0 win against St. Martin.
This call by the PRMNT is Arrieta's second appearance after debuting with Puerto Rico on October 2. Puerto Rico face Grenada tonight, October 22, Guadeloupe on October 24 and Saint Kitts and Nevis on October 26 as part of the Group E second qualifying round.
Arrieta, who played as a forward in the previous round, will remain with the Puerto Rican National Team until October 27, thus missing Philadelphia Union's final match of the 2010 season at Columbus Crew on Sunday, October 24. Arrieta will report back to Philadelphia on October 27 for postseason training activities.
