DC United on tap for Union in U.S. Open Cup

Chester, Pa. – The Philadelphia Union are set to square off with D.C United in the Round of 16 in the U.S. Open Cup, U.S. Soccer confirmed Thursday.

The match will take place at PPL Park on June 30 at 7:30 p.m.

The Union defeated the Rochester Rhinos 3-1 on penalty kicks on Tuesday at PPL Park to advance in the fourth round of the USOC, the oldest soccer tournament in the United States.

The U.S. Open Cup used a fixed bracket starting with the Round of 16 for the first time this year. After being divided into four regions, the Union was placed in the Eastern group with D.C United, the New York Red Bulls and the New York Cosmos from the NASL. The games were determined by a random draw Thursday morning.

In 2014, the Union made it to the final of the U.S. Open Cup before suffering a 3-1 loss to the Seattle Sounders in overtime.
