The Philadelphia Flyers will open their 41st National Hockey League season on Thursday, October 4, against the Flames in Calgary. The Flyers will commence the home portion of their 2007-08 regular season schedule on Saturday, October 13, when they host the New York Islanders at the Wachovia Center. The 82-game regular season slate will conclude on Sunday, April 6, with a home game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The National Hockey League's regular season schedule format emphasizes division rivalries. Each team will play eight games against each of its four division rivals. The Flyers compete in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference, along with the New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins, so the Flyers will play eight games against each of their four divisional opponents. In addition, the Flyers will play four games against each of the 10 non-division clubs in the Eastern Conference (the five teams in the Northeast Division - Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs and the five teams in the Southeast Division - Atlanta Thrashers, Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals). Each club will also play 10 inter-conference games, hosting one game against all five clubs from a designated division and traveling for one game each against all five clubs from a different division. For the Flyers, they will host each team in the Pacific Division for one game at the Wachovia Center (Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings, Phoenix Coyotes and San Jose Sharks) and will visit each team in the Northwest Division for one game (Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota Wild and Vancouver Canucks).
The longest Flyers' road trip of the season lasts eight games, from October 24 through November 8. During the trip, they will play games against Florida, Tampa Bay, Boston, Montreal, Washington, NY Rangers, Pittsburgh and New Jersey. The Flyers' longest homestand of the season is a six-game stretch from January 20 through February 2, when they will host Ottawa, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, NY Rangers and Anaheim.
The Flyers host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday, December 27, at Wachovia Center. The game marks the latest home game in the month of December for the Flyers since they hosted the New York Rangers on December 28, 1978, at the Spectrum. Disney on Ice has occupied the Flyers' home arena, while the team has taken extended road trips since December of 1979. This year Disney's High School Musical: The Ice Tour will perform at Wachovia Center from Friday, December 28 through Tuesday, January 1.
The 2007 NHL All-Star Celebration will get underway on Saturday, January 26, at Philips Arena in Atlanta with the NHL SuperSkills Competition and the NHL YoungStars Game and will be followed by the 56th NHL All-Star Game on Sunday, January 27.
