As rumored earlier, the Phillies have placed closer Tom Gordon on the 15-day disabled list due to rotator cuff inflammation. The move is retroactive to May 2.
Gordon is 1-1 on the season with a 4.82 earned run average through nine games. He has five saves on the season, but has also blown another three chances. The 39-year-old has apparently been bothered by the shoulder problems since Spring Training despite earlier comments by the club that he was healthy.
Former starter and ace Brett Myers will most likely fill the closer's role while Gordon is on the DL -- and maybe after that as well. Myers picked up his first career save with a perfect ninth in Thursday's 9-7 victory.
27-year-old righty Yoel Hernandez had his contract purchased from Triple-A Ottawa to fill Gordon's roster spot. He was 1-0 with three saves and a 3.68 ERA in seven relief appearances with Ottawa.
